Our Mission
The Almaden Valley Counseling Service envisions a community where everyone has access to affordable mental health counseling. AVCS is a community-based, nonprofit counseling agency committed to meeting the mental health concerns of all ages, with an emphasis on youth. AVCS offers a full range of counseling services to support and promote personal growth, positive family relationships, and emotional well-being.
Services We Provide
Counseling Services
Short and long term counseling for children, adolescents, individual adults, couples and families. Fees are based on a sliding scale and are determined by income.
Counselors on Campus
Counselors conduct outreach and intervention on school campuses, providing regularly scheduled and emergency services to 28 south San Jose schools.
Geriatric Advisory Program
Counselors assist Older Adults experiencing medical and/or psychological, intellectual and behavioral problems not associated with normal aging.
Parenting Classes
Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) classes are offered quarterly. See Parenting Classes for latest information and registration.
Cooperative Parenting And Divorce Classes

Education Outreach
Speakers are available to lead workshops and discussion groups on a variety of topics. A Community Forum was held at Leland High School on the topic: "How to Keep Your Children Safe-Talking to Teens about Driving". This forum was sponsored by Councilmember Nancy Pyle, Leland High School and Almaden Valley Counseling Service
Information and Referrals
Unfortunately, AVCS is sometimes unable to serve all levels of need. In these cases, AVCS also maintains a network of qualified specialized therapists and referrals can be made accordingly.
Internship Training Program
The Almaden Valley Counseling Service provides internships for masters level clinical counseling programs starting each Fall. Supervision is conducted by Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. 18 to 20 hours per week are required.
Funding
Almaden Valley Counseling Service is funded by the Almaden Valley Counseling Service Auxiliary, community organizations, local businesses, individual donations, grants and client fees. Fundraising Events have included: The Almaden Times Classic 10K Run, the Broomstick Ball, Breakfast with Santa, and the Home Tour. Check for event dates under Fundraising Events.
